Founded in 1863, the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland is a historic and gorgeous landmark of the area. It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I’ve been to and I was happy to stroll through the lovely grounds on this sunny day.
Most of the grave sites here are quite old and feature some great design from the turn of the century through the forties. My favorites were those that have an Egyptian theme. I’ve always had a fascination with Ancient Egypt & really love the imagery that came back into fashion in the 20′s, when King Tut’s tomb was uncovered.

This was my favorite sighting of the day. I wonder who this person was & how they came to rest in this elaborate pyramid.
I highly recommend taking a walk or drive through the gorgeous grounds of the Mountain View Cemetery if you find yourself in Oakland, It’s worth the trip.

Wow! This place is gorgeous! I used to visit a lot of cemeteries in middle school and high school, but not so much anymore, mostly due to the fact the ones around Portland aren’t as interesting as the ones Eugene. :/ My favorites, like you, are for sure the Egyptian themed ones! Always fabulous!

Oh! And your shoes are super cute!
Interesting to see Elizabeth Short’s gravestone – I’ve read all about the Black Dahlia case and I seem to remember seeing pictures of the gravestone before but I didn’t know which cemetery it was in until now.
Oh this cemetery is so beautiful. I visited once before, a few years ago, and was amazed with how lovely it is. As a London girl, it’s amazing to me to visit a sunny cemetery filled with palm trees!
